Tangram is the classic Chinese dissection puzzle: seven flat pieces - two large triangles, one medium triangle, two small triangles, a square, and a parallelogram - that together form a perfect square, and from that same set, thousands of other figures. The puzzle emerged in China around the turn of the 19th century and swept Europe and America within decades; it has stayed in print ever since, which makes it one of the oldest puzzles still played in its original form.

The rules have not changed in two hundred years. You are shown a silhouette, and you must recreate it using all seven tans: every piece is used exactly once, pieces may be rotated and the parallelogram flipped, and nothing may overlap. What makes tangram deceptive is that a silhouette hides its internal boundaries - a shape that looks like it obviously needs a large triangle in one corner often needs two small pieces instead, and the difference between a near-solve and a solve is usually one stubborn piece that forces you to rethink the whole figure.
